ABOUT GALLATIN ICE FOUNDATION: The mission of the Gallatin Ice Foundation is to fund the expansion and continued operations of refrigerated ice facilities for the health and wellness of our communities. The vision of the GIF is to provide the Gallatin Valley with a year-round refrigerated ice rink and support the growth of ice programing for youth and adults of our community.

Bozeman and its surrounding communities in southwest Montana are defined in large part by long, cold winters and the enthusiastic embrace of an active lifestyle. Home to iconic places like Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky, and Bridger Bowl, the area is renowned for winter sports like world-class alpine, Nordic, and backcountry skiing, ice climbing, wildlife viewing, and snowmobiling. The region is also increasingly popular for ice skating – an affordable lifetime sport that is enjoyed by people of all ages. 

THE POSITION: In this newly established role, the Director of Philanthropy will work to expand upon the Gallatin Ice Foundation’s successful philanthropic efforts and complete the final phase of the Raise the Ice Barn, a campaign to raise several million dollars to create a year-round ice facility in the heart of the Gallatin Valley. The Director of Philanthropy will help sustain and grow a culture of philanthropy and build a sustainable development organization able to fund GIF’s short- and long-term strategic goals.

The Director of Philanthropy will serve as a strategic partner to both the General Manager and the Board of Directors. S/he will join an exceptionally committed, passionate group dedicated to GIF’s continued and expanded impact and success.

The Director of Philanthropy has overall responsibility for designing and executing fundraising strategies. The Director provides inspirational and competent management to foster and develop a high performing team able to grow annual revenue year over year. S/he designs and implements both short- and long-term engagement strategies to maximize relationships with existing donors and identify new donors.

MEASURES OF SUCCESS: Eighty percent of time is spent doing, twenty percent is spent learning about the ice community.

Within the first 3-6 months, the Director of Philanthropy will achieve the following:

  • Has mastered systems and process such that donors experience a smooth transition from previous staff.
  • The ice user and larger community are aware of the transition and perceive it as smooth and moving well.
  • Key donors and members of the community have been identified and a plan to meet with them is in place.
  • Established trust and confidence with the GIF staff and Board through capable leadership.
  • Began the creation of a fundraising plan designed to raise six figures annually in philanthropic revenue from all sources.

Within the first 6-12 months, the Director of Philanthropy will achieve the following:

  • Refines and begins execution of an integrated fundraising plan with prioritized strategies and defined goals.
  • Has become a recognized leader in the ice user and broader community.
  • Re engaged with relevant constituencies and reworked plans for the a seven-figure naming gift


Fundraising (85%)

  • Develop and implement strategies to advance GIF’s revenue goals.
  • Recommend and implement gift models, payment strategies, inventories of donor benefits, compelling campaign messages, and related materials designed to capture the attention and support of pre-qualified donors.
  • Develop and lead team of Board, community members and other supporters who assist GIF development efforts in a volunteer capacity.
  • With Board of Directors, create and continually refine development strategy to meet the goals of the Raise the Ice Barn campaign and ensure a sustainable fundraising model to support the organization’s long-term goals.

Staff & Program Management (15%).

  • Collaborate with the construction committee to ensure the costs of construction are realistic and aligned with fundraising goals and potential. to identify and drive strategies designed to increase the number of major gift donors and prospects. 


The following specific skills, experience, knowledge and attributes are needed for high performance and are desired for the Director of Philanthropy:

  • Five or more years of leadership and development experience in the nonprofit sector.
  • Track record of success as a fundraiser with the demonstrated ability to attract, cultivate, solicit, and secure gifts.
  • Program management skills and experience, including short- and long-term planning and evaluation, philanthropy ethics, cultivation practices, and development and maintenance of systems and processes.
  • Skilled in effective teamwork; ability to drive alignment and productive collaboration.
  • Accustomed to being held accountable for bottom-line results.
  • Highly engaging, exuberant and approachable with savvy interpersonal skills; diplomatic, ambassadorial, and authentic.
  • Highly skilled and experienced in polished and persuasive written and oral communication.
  • Entrepreneurial and creative; driven to innovate and improve.
  • Enthusiasm for and positive representation of GIF’s mission, values, goals, and culture.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
