Job Description

Montana start-up seeks extremely talented VP of Engineering to help pioneer big data analytics and marketing automation in the Tours and Activities industry.

You must have experience hiring and leading a team of blackbelt engineers and a burning desire to scale a world-class engineering organization. You should be excited about the challenge of planning for, designing and delivering a product that will eventually support trillions of data points and leverage them to transform an industry.

And you should be able to do so in about half the time that most competent people think possible.

You should have a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or the equivalent. Top-notch communication skills are essential. Expect talented, motivated, and interesting co-workers who love the outdoors, each other, and solving absurdly big problems. You will join a management team with deep expertise in digital marketing, machine learning, data architecture and the Tours and Activities Industry.

Must be willing to relocate to the Missoula area (we will help cover moving costs).

The tours and activities industry is a $183B severely underserved industry. And it’s growing with millennial purchasing power.

But, it remains one of the world’s largest industries without Billion $ company helping suppliers aggregate their data and automate their marketing.

The industry is dominated by 100k+ small businesses with complex workflows, small budgets, and a lack of technical know-how. For years, this precluded the development of a digital foundation upon which to build a marketing platform.

But that has changed.

Modern reservation systems have digitized tens of thousands of tour providers over the last 5 years.

Despite this, each individual company is still marketing its services in a silo – akin to the individual bookseller pre-Amazon.

There is tremendous potential in aggregating this data and using machine learning/AI to automate marketing efforts, increase conversion rates, optimize pricing, build booking propensity models, and share leads.

And that’s exactly what TOMIS is doing. Our vision is to:

  1. Build the first AI-powered marketing platform for the tour and activity industry
  2. Scale into additional underserved verticals.

As we scale our engineering team, there are 3 large problems we’d like to solve, and one big problem we’d like to preempt.

Current Problem #1: Attract and hire TOP engineering talent as we expand

Current Problem #2: Build strong technical infrastructure as we prepare to scale existing SaaS revenue streams and turn on additional ones

Current Problem #3: Plan a tight product roadmap that balances innovative feature development with technical considerations. Execute it with flawless on-time delivery

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve as a key member of the management team that sets TOMIS’s strategic direction.
  2. Craft a detailed plan to execute on the product needs of TOMIS’s corporate strategy
  3. Recruit, hire, support, inspire, manage, and lead a team of exceptional engineers.
  4. Formulate long-term objectives and standards of performance for the department.
  5. Assure engineering achieves objectives and project completion within budget and time frame.
  6. Be a student of current industry trends. Ensure TOMIS maintains and expands its technology leadership position.
  7. Provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on help and support: be happy to get in the mud and roll around.
  8. Identify, implement, and refine the necessary formal process to support the product development process.
  9. Hire, promote, train, and support our first layer of engineering managers as we grow

You should be able to OWN all these things while shipping quality product and giving the rest of the organization transparency into the process.

QUALIFICATIONS + SKILLS

  1. Experience: Minimum, 10+ years of software experience, with at least 5 years in a management position.
  2. You are a blackbelt engineer yourself
  3. Proven ability to recruit and hire other blackbelt engineers
  4. Proven ability to create and lead a thriving engineering culture that retains, challenges, grows, supports, and educates blackbelt engineers
  5. You can create a product roadmap that balances innovative feature builds with tech debt and infrastructure considerations
  6. Proven ability to execute on a product roadmap with on-time delivery
  7. Strong relationship management, strategy development, project management, problem-solving and change management skills.
  8. Professional and positive approach, self-motivated, strong in building relationships, team player, dynamic, creative with the ability to work on own initiative.
  9. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
