Product Owner, Digital Programs

The COMMIT Foundation’s mission is to help exceptional American servicemembers and veterans transition into successful roles and careers post-service. The COMMIT Foundation is changing the way veterans and Corporate America think about military transition by providing high touch transition support that becomes the standard nationwide so veterans in all communities can access services helping them identify their passions, build strong networks, and leverage their skills in civilian careers. 

COMMIT is developing new software products rapidly and pioneering new tailored veteran transition software solutions to serve veterans at scale. We are currently in the early stages of building a secure community for veterans to network through their transition and to mentor their peers. At COMMIT, we invest in and develop advances in technology and employ creative and passionate people seeking to affect change in our nation’s veteran population through their transition into new opportunities in civilian life.

As the Product Owner, Digital Programs, you will build and leverage partnerships with business and technology teams to develop a comprehensive understanding of the needs of our veteran population, analyze qualitative and quantitative data, and drive both a functional and technical perspective to lead, manage, and work closely with software engineers, designers, and other internal and external stakeholders. The primary role of the Product Owner will be to represent the needs of the users of COMMIT’s software platform, manage design and development teams, and ensure alignment of strategic product development roadmaps by carefully tracking KPIs and key milestones in collaboration with team members and company direction.  

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 4-6 years experience working as a Product Manager or Product Owner in a highly collaborative and complex technical landscape
  • 4-6 years experience working with the design and delivery of backend and frontend software products, integrations and data reporting solutions to enable stakeholders to achieve business goals
  • Ability to develop a strong understanding of customer needs, business, and technical strategy and vision
  • Ability to write effective user stories with clear acceptance criteria focused on business value and sized appropriately to be completed within defined sprints
  • Working knowledge of software engineering best practices and understanding of both structured and unstructured data
  • Experience understanding conceptual, logical, and functional programming and data models
  • Experience contracting software development teams and freelancers
  • Experience managing remote teams, both internal and external, to lead operational success 
  • Experience working with User Experience and User Interface designers to ensure sound frontend architectures, and scalable, componentized frontend design 
  • Strong technical acumen to understand system needs, architectural requirements, and constraints
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Strong meeting and work session facilitation skills
  • Strong project planning and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to adapt to new and changing requirements, processes, and ambiguity
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Management, Product Design or equivalent 

SCOPE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Project Management 
    • Responsible for defining user stories and prioritizing feature backlog to streamline the execution of software priorities while maintaining the conceptual and technical integrity of the software platform
    • Act as the voice of the customer and product management vision for the team across the software platform
    • Lead the delivery plan and progress to the plan ensuring sprint and roadmap goals are met
    • Prioritize and make trade-offs based on understanding of strategies, budget, epics, business requirements, goals and delivered value
    • Be engaged, responsive, and agile to help remove roadblocks, and solve challenges
    • Coordinate dependencies with other stakeholders, defining acceptance criteria, and accepting or rejecting work per sprint
    • Conduct analysis to determine how features are performing and how they can be improved
    • Advise team leadership on team operational opportunities, resource, skill, and capacity concerns
    • Communicate consistently and clearly to all team members where needed to ensure requirements are understood, questions are answered, issues are raised, and solutions are delivered effectively and efficiently
    • Invest time in individual team member development towards software goals and technology interests while developing the overall versatility of the team
  • Software Development
    • Ensure software team is thoroughly documenting code, testing, and mitigating defects and issues
    • Be accountable for reviewing and reprioritizing the backlog in preparation for sprint planning and help define the sprint across multiple product areas
    • Align expectations with, and manage contracted engineering and design teams
    • Ensure brand guidelines are followed across all software properties and website
    • Foster an agile mindset for the team, including continuous improvement and the understanding that overall accountability for the entire product belongs to the team as a whole
    • Participate in an Agile / Scrum methodology to deliver high quality solutions
    • Create and lead solutions in gathering quantitative analytics and qualitative feedback regarding veteran population
    • Assist with decision making with software architecture and engineering to assist with sequencing of critical technological infrastructures to support new business functionality
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

ADDITIONAL PREFERENCES:

  • Experience working with Salesforce database, reporting, and admin architectures
  • Basic understanding of working with cloud-based infrastructure services
  • Experience with self-service tools such as AirTable, Freshdesk, Slack, MailChimp, Google Analytics 
  • Experience building and supporting digital communities
  • Experience in email automation and digital marketing 
  • Military experience
  • Knowledge of military culture 
  • Experience with executive coaching, recruitment, or hiring

Compensation: Competitive salary with consideration given to level of experience
