Job Description

The Montana Science Center is looking for an individual interested in making a difference in young people’s lives through science education. Interactive science communication relies on personality, creativity and the ability to approach problems from different perspectives.

All team members of the Montana Science Center contribute to the well-being of our community by providing safe, supportive, affordable, educational experiences for whole families to enjoy. As a part of the Program team, this position assists in various programming that is hands-on, informal learning focused on STEM topics and appeals to visitors of all ages.

Program team members are encouraged to gain general knowledge about the Science Center to perform all duties effectively and efficiently. A Program team member will work well with differing opinions and bring ideas and initiative to the position. They will assist in developing and implementing our programs across a number of platforms, including digital/virtual applications. Our program goals include growing participation, increasing the age ranges that participate and advocating science to and for those that barriers prevent them from participating.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Programs
    • Assist with high-tech makerspace programs as needed
    • Assist with Science Station program - leading hands-on activities at various times throughout the week
    • Assist with weekly programming throughout and where needed
    • Act as docent and facilitator to self-guided field trips in the exhibit space
    • Attend outreach events with additional staff, including off-site field trips, community events, pop-up Science opportunities and more
    • Help with planning and implementing day or multi-day camps throughout the year
  • Volunteer Coordination
    • Work with Program team and Visitor Services staff to collect and organize volunteer opportunities
    • Manage volunteers as needed during events and opportunities
  • Visitor Services
    • Be trained at the Front Desk/Guest Services as needed
    • Act as “backup role” for Front Desk when needed and doesn’t conflict with program schedule
    • Be willing to assist with care of living creatures & facilities at MSC as needed
  • General
    • Support and coordinate with other program team members & programs, including participating in the annual strategic planning and other key Science Center events
    • As a member of the MSC staff team, work on special projects throughout the year
  • Other duties as assigned

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Outstanding verbal/written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Google Suite is required
  • Experience with membership databases, MailChimp, and Slack is preferred
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, projects, and priorities effectively and professionally
  • Ability to travel within the state
  • Some moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds) may be required on an occasional basis.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car or ability to rent a car as needed for travel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with science-based program management
  • Experience working for a nonprofit

Hours: PT at 20 hours per week; preferred Tuesday - Saturday schedule. Hours are flexible depending on the employee's schedule, and must be approved by a direct supervisor. Evening hours may be required.

Wages: $18 per hour

Benefits: Benefits package will be discussed upon employment, as benefits are changing for 2022.

SCIENCE CENTER ENVIRONMENT

The Science Center facility is ADA compliant. Position requires sitting and/or standing for long periods of time, occasional extended hours, computer work. We prefer individuals with a passion for cooperative learning and play for children of all ages. An interest in science and technology education is a bonus. Evaluation

Position will be evaluated semi-annually. Additional one-on-one meetings with the supervisor are conducted weekly.
